Summer Tracks I

Imagine Dragons - It's Time

Imagine Dragons are a four-piece from Las Vegas, who are currently in the middle of what I imagine is an international tour - one of my brothers saw them in Bristol sometime around Easter. I have to credit that brother with my liking them, which is weird for me because usually it's the other way around. Regardless of my usual music-hunting credentials, Imagine Dragons are pretty awesome, the sort of big noise that doesn't sound weird if you play it a little quietly in your bedroom in the middle of the night, but doesn't get distorted if you blast it as you walk along on an overcast day. For some reason, although every track on 'Night Visions' is 'Summer Track' worthy in its own right, and you should really just whack the whole thing on any summer playlist you care to make, 'It's Time' stood out to me today, and I couldn't put my finger on why until I found this quote by the front man, Dan Reynolds: "I wrote 'It's Time' during a very transitional period in my life...I was trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life...I was making decision about who I was." At this time of year, when school or college or university is coming to an end, making decisions about futures is very pertinent.

Summer is not only about that one dance-y track that the radio claims is going to be 'the soundtrack to your summer'. My 'Summer Tracks' section, will be all about the songs that really do say something about how I'm feeling about the summer. Big, anthem-y rock, indie folk-y nonsense that sounds like fields (to me anyway), Americana that sounds like hot, dry summer that we never see in the UK, and a little feel-good pop thrown in for good measure - they all seem far more 'summery' to me than the Black Eyed Peas telling me that 'tonight's gonna be a good night'.
