The Civil Wars

The release of The Civil Wars' follow-up album might be shrouded in the knowledge that it is very likely their finale, the fall-out from the cancellation of their European tour nine months ago and the rumoured silence between Williams and White fresh in everyone's minds. Extra-musical problems aside, the self-titled record is the latest in a lot of really great 'break-up' albums. There's a haunting poignancy to lyrics such as 'Oh if I could go back in time/ When you only held me in my mind' (1.The One That Got Away) and 'hope this finds you well/ There's so much I'm dying to tell, but oh/ That's how it goes// Little things left unsaid' (12.D'Arline); the wistful air to Williams' breathy vocals on the soaring melodies tugs at my heartstrings (despite their lack of heartache). It's almost pure, melancholy Americana, with none of the doses of hope that Barton Hollow was sprinkled with (see: I've Got This Friend).
